Playing tunes, the heat and allergies
Today is the day before we go in and knock out 4 tunes in the studio with the band. It's pretty damn warm here
in NorCal-upper 70's-and it feels good to play in this kind of weather. Somehow I got something in my left eye in the morning and it swelled up making me look like I got in a fight en route to the rehearsal. One tune we're doing is by a group from New Zealand-there's a section that is in 4/4 time but the piano and the bass are in 5/8-a kind of overlapping thing that has really nice counterpoint. It's called Parallax and it's written by Leigh Jackson http://leighjackson.muzic.net.nz/. It's not your normal
"jazz" fare for sure but it is rewarding and fun to play. I'm really tired of defining the musical style of a tune-it's just good music that has some improvisation in it and a lot of fun counterpoint in the lines. We're looking towards having a good session tomorrow. I'll let you all know how it turned out and probably I'll post a little bit up on the podcasting page.
Cheerio!
